AQUAYOGA : OR HOW TO RELAX IN WATER

A previous article described the benefits of aquasports in general, and in particular those of aquayoga.

This discipline applies the codes of traditional yoga to exercises in water heated to 32°C. And, despite what many people think, aquayoga is not only for the elderly or pregnant women!

Anyone can take part in this sport and relax, which is ideal for people suffering from stress. It is also recommended for people who suffer from rheumatism or arthritis. This will help you ease off all the tension and have fun.

So how does this aquasport work?

You must wear a diving mask and lie down in the water on your back or on your tummy. At the start of the session, you will learn how to breathe, in order to dispel your stress and open up your rib cage.

Aquayoga is based on two specific movements: undulation and spirals. When lying down, you make undulation movements by making wave shapes with your hands, your hips or your feet. And then you make spiral movements with your body, while on your back or on your tummy.

The benefits?

Since these movements are all made in water, their impacts are much lower than those movements made on dry land. You can try out different poses in the water as there is no risk of falling down and injuring yourself!

Aquayoga is as good for the mind as it is for the body. This discipline makes your body more supple and improves your posture. It also exercises your breathing, relieves tension and eliminates toxins.

And for tense people who have trouble sleeping, aquayoga can help to cure sleeping disorders.

AND WHAT ABOUT AQUARELAXING ?

Aquarelaxing is a sport that combines taï-chi and stretching but in water. Ideally, this water sport is practiced in groups.

During each session, you make passive movements, followed by gentle stretching exercises.

For greater relaxation, the body should be in the horizontal position. Lie down as flat as you comfortably can. A practitioner is around to help you. The practitioner will massage the different parts of your body, by pressing on very specific places.

The practitioner will also accompany you in your stretching exercises to make your muscles more supple, as well as the part of a carefully controlled sequence.

Your body will benefit in many ways! First, mentally, because the totally relaxed atmosphere will allow you to wind down and think about something completely different.

This sport can be practised by anyone who suffers from muscular contractures or aches.

AND LAST OF ALL... WATSU !

Watsu is an aquatic version of shiatsu. It combines the benefits of being in water with those of the famous Japanese massage technique. This discipline is very popular in spas, due to its positive effects on stress and personal development. It is a pleasurable activity with the added bonus of relaxing your muscles.
In these sessions, you are always accompanied by a therapist. The goal is to relax in water under the practitioner’s guidance.

The practitioner moves you around the pool while performing a number of stretching movements and activating various acupuncture points.

In physical terms, watsu helps to free up your stress and release your tension. Working in water also helps to gently exercise your spine, by taking away the weight that is usually applied to your vertebrae.

Watsu also has beneficial effects on people suffering from chronic back and muscle pain, physical or psychic tension, depression, fatigue, neuro-muscular disorders, chronic headaches and other forms of stress.

Be ready to have a pleasurable session and be at peace with yourself and your surrounding.
