SPORT WHEN YOU ARE SICK: A GOOD IDEA?

Both addicts and occasional athletes need their dose of sport. But sometimes you simply have to face up to the fact that you are unwell. A runny nose or a tummy ache that begs for a break...

CAN YOU PRACTISE YOUR SPORT WITH A COLD, A SLIGHT COUGH OR A HEADACHE?

A runny nose, endless sneezing, a sore throat... The chances are that you have caught a winter cold.

But even if you don’t feel tip-top, it doesn’t mean that you have to stop practising your favourite sport. On the contrary, sport can help you to keep the machine in shape and get well more quickly.

 

But you need to take it easy to avoid becoming exhausted.

So you are advised to reduce the usual level of intensity, to avoid becoming definitively bed-ridden.

AND WHAT ABOUT FLU, GASTRO-ENTERITIS AND FEVER?

These illnesses are a quite different matter. Flu

, gastro-enteritis and stomach aches can sometimes cause high temperatures. In this case, it is better to give sport a miss altogether.

Your body needs to concentrate all its resources on getting better.

 

As well as simply listening to your body, here is another simple tip to find out whether you are in a fit state for sport or not.

The symptoms located above your shoulder line (a slight cough, runny nose, headaches, etc.) will not have a global impact on your sporting activity. Anything below the shoulder line, such as stomach ache or fever, constitutes a precise contraindication.

 

And there’s another reason to give up on sport where you are seriously ill. You could end up contaminating your teammates during the practice session! The best thing you can do is to keep your germs to yourself, stay warm at home and take care of yourself.

WHEN CAN I START TRAINING AGAIN AFTER AN ILLNESS?

There is no precise timeline for the return to sport after an illness.

Everyone recovers at their own pace, and it all obviously depends on the illness in question.

 

The best thing you can do is to listen to your body.

If you feel listless, then don’t tempt fate and take it easy for a few more days. It is preferable to get back in shape, rather than overstepping the mark and paying the price for months on end.

 

If in doubt about any persistent symptoms, seek medical advice. Only a doctor can tell you just what to do.

NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, REGULAR SPORT WILL KEEP YOU IN GOOD SHAPE ALL YEAR ROUND.
