HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF THE BEST CHANCE OF SAVING A PENALTY?

It's impossible to help you become a top goalkeeper without talking about penalties.
Because yes, penalties happen a lot more than we think. But the positive thing about a penalty is that no one will say anything if you don't save it. So there's no pressure on you. You can make mistakes. But it's also a chance for you to shine!

Here are a few tips to help you better prepare for penalties, and yes, to save them too.

Have a bit of fun with the striker.

Try and establish a few rituals, like handing the ball to the other player yourself, for example, to try and put them off. You're entering into a sort of psychological war with the penalty taker.

Look at...

...the taker's position, their face, their eyes, their run up shape. The aim is to detect the slightest sign that will give you a hint as to their intentions.

Remind yourself what they did during the match.

Remind yourself what they did during the match. How did they strike the ball? Did they tend to add curl? Or did they go for the piledrivers? It's very likely they'll strike the ball in the same way. Notice that at amateur level, most players hit across goal as it's harder to open up your foot.

Make a decision...

... unless you're sure they're going to do a panenka, a likelihood if they've spend the entire match teasing you. You can't hesitate here either. You shouldn't stay in the middle of the goal – if you dive to one side you've got more chance of saving.

Anticipate

The key to anticipation is to step forward slightly before diving to one side, in order to reduce the angle.
